Checklist
How to Prepare Your Quilt
A well-prepared quilt makes for a smoother quilting process and a better finished result. Please follow these steps before sending your quilt to us.
-
Clip All Loose Threads
Clip all loose threads on the underside (back) of your quilt top. Threads left unclipped will show through on the finished quilt, especially if you are using light-colored backing fabric.
-
Press Your Quilt Top & Backing
Press your quilt top and backing fabric until they are wrinkle-free. Do not press with steam — it can distort your quilt. A well-pressed top results in smoother, more even quilting.
-
Mark the Top
Place a safety pin at the top center edge of your quilt top and at the top center of your backing. This tells us which edge is the top and how to orient your design.
-
Size Your Backing & Batting
Cut your backing and batting so they are at least 4 inches larger than your quilt top on all sides (e.g., a 60×80" top needs a 68×88" backing). This is required so the quilt can be loaded onto the frame.
-
Piece Your Backing if Needed
If your quilt requires a pieced backing, remove any selvages before sewing. We also offer a backing-piecing service for $15 per seam if you prefer us to handle it.
-
Ship or Drop Off
Fold your quilt top, backing, and batting separately. Pack carefully and include your completed order form. We accept drop-off and shipping — contact us for our mailing address.
Your Order Form Checklist
When you submit your order, you'll confirm the following:
- I understand that backing and batting must be at least 4 inches larger than the quilt top on all sides.
- I understand the current turnaround time is within 4 weeks from date of quilt receipt at Austin Quilting location.
- I understand and agree that Cheryl Degan or Austin Quilting will not be liable for accidental damage that may come to my quilt while in her possession or during shipping. Quilts are insured for $100 during shipping.
- If I am dissatified with my finished quilt I may request a refund of the quilting charges and upon receipt of such refund I accept it as my compete and total remedy. I agree and accept that I will not be reimbursed for the cost of my materials to make the quilt top, shipping or construction related labor.
